U.S. Masters Swimming June Krauser Communications Award

The Pacific Masters Swimming organization set a U. S. Masters Swimming communications standard by reaching out to its more than 120 clubs and 10,000 members (as well as other swimming enthusiasts) with two websites, an e-newsletter, an online calendar, a Facebook group page, a Twitter account, and a USMS Swimmer Magazine newsletter supplement. The LMSC’s website was created in 1995 by Michael Moore and predated the USMS website. More recently, the “Open Water Pacific” website was created to reach out to open water enthusiasts. Caroline Lambert created the Pacific Masters Facebook group in 2009 and it had grown to >600 members by 2010.

The Pacific Masters newsletter was published six times a year and arrived as an insert in the USMS Swimmer Magazine. Joanne Berven was the editor. An e-newsletter produced by Michael and titled “The update”, was distributed approximately 40 times a year to over 16,000 readers. Tracy Barbutes created and managed the LMSC’s Twitter account and Caroline created an online swimming calendar that included meet dates and entry links.
