A member of the Nebraska LMSC, Cathy began coaching the Lincoln Masters Swim Club in 1979, while still a student-athlete at the University of Nebraska. Upon graduation she moved to Omaha and co-founded Omaha Masters with Todd Samland. In 1987 Cathy moved to New Jersey and took over as head coach of the Berkeley Aquatic Club Masters. She also founded Rutgers University Masters. During her coaching career she coached many Masters world and national record setters. Cathy served as the meet director for a number of meets, including the first Colonies Zone SCM Championship meet in 1996. She also Chaired the New Jersey LMSC.
