Mel Goldstein, the 1997 Capt. Ransom J. Arthur M.D. Award recipient, is a natural leader who loves swimming and coaching. He was coached in college by the legendary Doc Councilman at Indiana University, who instilled in Mel the motivation to believe in oneself. Dale Neuberger was also a great influence in Goldstein’s path to leadership; he mentored Mel when Indianapolis hosted the 1983 USMS Long Course Championships. Previously, Goldstein had not been a meet director. In 1984 Mel founded a small Masters program with five swimmers, that would grow to more than 100 by 1996, when he retired from his career and could really begin to devote time to coaching.

Mel served as meet director for the 1989 Pan Pacific Championships, the 1992 FINA World Championships, and four YMCA Masters National Championships. He served as USMS Secretary (1990-1993) and USMS President (1994-1997). Mel’s contributions to USMS both on the deck and in leadership positions are exemplary.
